Notes
Reminiscent of analytical Cubism and with influences from Russian Constructivism and Paris in the 60s, Marc’s palette is rich and complex, and his obsessive exploration into geometrically constructed planes of colour has resulted in an instantly recognizable and unique style.
Robert Marc was born as Robert Marc Sangnier in 1943 in Auxerre. He spent his youth in Switzerland before returning to France, determined to enter art school. Inspired greatly by the museums of Europe, he was particularly enamored by Malevich and Rodchenko. Paris of the 1960s was a seminal time in Marc’s life, with its stimulations ranging from the jazz of John Coltrane to the African art in the galleries of the rue Guenegaud. Unlike many of his peers, however, Marc deliberately avoided the limelight of Parisian life, content to spend all his time quietly working in the French countryside.
He exhibited in France and internationally, including shows in New York and Tokyo, developing a wide following throughout Europe, Japan and the United States until his untimely death in 1993. With an increasingly strong record on the secondary market, today Marc’s paintings form part of important private and public collections worldwide.
