Notes

Paul and his elder brother Matthijs, both born in Antwerp, were landscape painters. Paul, a student of his father and of Damiaen Oertelmans in Antwerp, followed his brother to Rome, where Matthijs worked on several fresco’s including the Vatican’s seasons. Matthijs died young and Paul continued his work around 1574. Paul did also engraving and small cabinet paintings on copper, some of which are signed with a pair of glasses.

The Bril Brothers form one of the links between the panoramic views of Joachim Patinir and the ideal landscape evolved by Nicolas Poussin and Claude de Lorrain

  • Possibly acquired by James Blackwell Praed ( 1775 – 1837 ) from Tyringham,
