Roosenboom was mainly known for his winter landscapes. He belongs to the Dutch Romantic movement and studied with Andries Schelfhout, marrying daughter Maria Schelfhout with whom he had four children. Margaretha Roosenboom, his daughter, became an important female painter. Nicolaas traveled to Germany and Scotland. He lived in Haarlem, The Hague, Amsterdam, Brussels, Rotterdam, Kampen and finally Assen in 1878. Frederik Kruseman and Cornelis Lieste belong to his pupils. He also collaborated with the Belgian animal painter Eugène Verboeckhoven.
This painting shows the hustle and bustle across the frozen river Het IJ in Amsterdam. With many skaters enjoying the beautiful atmosphere of winter in the 19th century.
