Notes

Narrabri Nakamarra was born in Haasts Bluff, not too far from Alice Springs, in central Australia, but the family soon moved to Papunya.  Her mother is Makinti Napanangka, a celebrated Papunya Tula artist who won the 2008 Telstra award. Narabri Nakamara’s sister -in-law Ngoia Pollard Napaltjarri.won the same award in 2006. So from being a young child, Narabri was exposed to painting.

Narrabri started to paint in 1999. Her style was heavily influenced by that of her mother, particularly in the use of straight lines representing sand hills and her exploration of themes associated with Lupulnga, the woman’s ceremonial site that her mother is custodian of. However her work prior to her passing, she had definitely developed her own distinctive style. Central Art showcased her work in the exhibition ‘Amazing Women of the Desert. She sadly passed away in June 2010.
