Notes
Kees Verkade is one of the best-known sculptors in the Netherlands. His most beloved subject is people, whom he prefers to model in movement, in both small sculptures and monumental statues. He prefers children, acrobats, athletes and dancers in extreme concentration. The tension and emotional charge give an extra dimension to his work. Until 1970, Verkade worked in his studio in Zandvoort on sculptures and on commissions of monumental work for, among others, the municipalities of Haarlem, Zandvoort, Groningen, Drachten and Amsterdam. He then made his international breakthrough and exhibited in galleries in London, Paris and the United States. Since 1979, the artist lived in Monaco, where he died in December 2020.
A similar example belongs to the collection of the Dutch embassy in Paris.
Later, Verkade made another version based on the image.
