Josephus Gerardus Hans was born in The Hague, Netherlands, 1826. Hans began his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, from 1839 to 1844. He was a pupil of the famous artist Andreas Schelfhout.
Hans followed his teacher in his techniques regarding the choice of motifs and composition of his landscape paintings. In his romantic landscapes he sometimes followed his teacher so closely in the choice of motif and composition that his paintings were ‘renamed’ a Schelfhout. He made several study trips through Germany, Belgium and Switzerland.
Hans Retuned to the Hague and focused mainly on landscape paintings but also engaged in lithography, where he ended up becoming the teacher of M.C. van de Poll. Hans continued painting and had many exhibitions in Amsterdam and The Hague from 1847 to 1878.
