Notes
Johann Daniel Bager came from an extensive family of artists. His father Johann Georg Bager worked as an architect, his uncle Philipp Daniel Bager as a painter. After initial basic artistic training, which his uncle probably gave him in Wiesbaden, he first went to Darmstadt and Frankfurt am Main, where he later gave art lessons himself. His oeuvre mainly includes portraits, genre scenes, landscapes and fruit still lifes. Among his most prominent clients were the von Goethe family and – as can be seen from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s autobiographical work “Poetry and Truth” – the French officer François de Théas von Thoranc.
