Jan Voerman was born in Kampen, his aptitude for drawing and painting revealed itself when he was still very young and at the age of twelve he received drawing and painting lessons. After training at the National Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam, for which he took an exam in 1883, he lived for a while in the former studio of Jozef Israëls.
Voerman also studied at the Antwerp Academy in the period 1880-1881. During this Amsterdam period he painted, among other things, Jordanian types, Jewish house scenes and cityscapes.
Jan Voerman started painting IJssel landscapes from the beginning of the twentieth century. It earned him the title ‘IJssel painter’, a name that is still used today. From this moment on, Voerman also switches to oil paint. His glorious period of the IJssel landscapes had now really begun.
