Notes
Jan Voerman junior was born in Hattem on January 23, 1890. As a child he was already fascinated by the world of plants and insects. He learned to draw with watercolor and oil paint at an early age from his father Jan Voerman senior.
At the age of fifteen, Jan Voerman junior received his first real assignment. His grandfather Ericus Verkade, the founder of the famous Dutch chocolate and cookies company Verkade, asked him in 1905 if he could make drawings for the nature albums that the Verkade company wanted to publish. Jan junior had to collaborate with the well-known illustrators Wenckenbach and Van Oort for this project.
Jan Voerman junior married Hetty Mansholt in 1923. In 1928 the Voerman family moved to Laren and in 1932 they had a house built in Blaricum.
There he made many illustrations for export catalogs for flower bulbs and many calendars, some commissioned by the Federal Savings Bank, but also in-house. Beautiful lithographs are also created here, for which he trained as a lithographer.
Voerman junior was then given the opportunity to devote himself to oil painting, which is sometimes called his great love. The period of Jan junior’s ‘free work’ began such as this lovely painting of a blossoming pink tulip. His love for all living things was visible in his work. Also in the way Voerman junior depicts the beauty of decay. Voerman referred to the beauty of all nature, including the beauty of decay.
