Notes
Jan van Heel was one of the main represent ants of post-war realism in Holland. The ‘Realisten’ were against abstraction in art. In their eyes it made art meaningless while the human element vanishes. They preferred recognizable images, but were in no way restricted to an academically precise representation of reality.
The Hague branch of Realists were somewhat less fanatical then their Amsterdam counterparts. Jan van Heels oeuvre exemplifies this school very clearly. His inspiration comes from circus life, Spanish landscape and animals.
