Hendrick van Anthonissen was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1605. It is believed that he began first learning underneath his father Aert van Antum. where after in 1626 he became the apprentice to his brother in law Jan Porcellis, followed by Jan van Goyen. His paintings, clearly influenced by his teachers, consist mainly of marine scenes.
Van Anthonissen moved frequently within the Netherlands, from Amsterdam to The Hague, Leiden, and Leiderdorp. Retuning to Amsterdam then to Rijnsburg, and finally in Amsterdam again.
His marine painting can be found in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, and the Prague Gallery, which his signature is seen as Hendrik van Antem. Many of his paintings were credited first to a mysterious painter, due to his nature of changing his signature numerous times. Where paintings signed H.v.Anthoinussen, HA, or HVA, created a confusing puzzle for art historians to solve.
Van Anthonissen remains known for his oil on panel marine paintings. Depicting beach scenes and seascapes in the manner of Jan Porcellis. Where his legacy lived on through his son, Arnoldus van Anthonissen. Who followed his father in the way of marine paintings.
