Notes

Eugène Boudin was a French painter best known for his sensitive and lively depictions of beach scenes and windswept harbors. He is considered one of the earliest plein-air painters, who completed his canvases entirely in situ rather than from studies back in the studio. The location of the wedding depicted in this lovely watercolour, Plougastel, is situated in Brittany across from the city Brest. The artist would make regular trips to this area during his lifetime and his very last trip in 1897. Looking at other watercolours of his oeuvre shows he made several more similar watercolours in Plougastel during the period 1867-1872.
