Notes

During his life, Musin was one of the most celebrated marine painters. When modern art movements began to gain popularity, he was somewhat forgotten. Francois Etienne Musin was a Belgian painter specializing in seascapes. He received his first drawing lessons from Michel Van Cuyck and Francois-Antoine Bossuet. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts and graduated after winning a gold medal in 1835. He continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he studied under Francois-Joseph Navez. In 1840 he began to exhibit and in 1842 he moved permanently to Brussels, completing his studies the following year. His career was boosted when King Leopold I bought two of his paintings in 1845.
