Notes

We are proud to introduce Hoogendijk’s first glass sculpture, a work born from fire, shaped by hand, and infused with ancestral echoes.

This figure is not merely a woman; she represents all women, a tribute to the mothers who came before us and the life that continues through us.

Inspired by Gaia, the primordial mother goddess in Greek mythology, the sculpture reflects creation, resilience and the quiet strength carried through generations. Transparent yet powerful, the glass form embodies both fragility and endurance.

The work was created using the lost-wax glass casting technique at the renowned Lhotský Studio in the Czech Republic, the world’s oldest cast glass studio. Developed through an intricate process of fire, time and craftsmanship, the sculpture captures every subtle gesture and emotion within the material. This piece marks a new chapter in Hoogendijk’s artistic practice, expanding her work into glass alongside bronze, photography and painting.

The process itself is nothing short of alchemical. It starts with a clay model, which creates a silicone mould, then a wax replica. This wax form is encased in a special mixture of plaster and silica sand. Once the wax is melted, glass is slowly cast into the cavity, heated and cooled over 15 days in a precisely controlled kiln. The result is a sculpture that captures every delicate detail, from tension to tranquillity, finished by hand over the course of a week and polished to a soft matte glow.

I opted for using a unique colour developed in the 1990s by Lhotský Studio in collaboration with American artist Howard Ben Tré. It is a rare colour, and Lhotský Studio is the only place in the world where this colour is available.

Much like Gaia, this glass figure embodies a quiet yet powerful presence: transparent yet unbreakable in spirit. She is a vessel of lineage, a luminous reminder that every woman carries within her the strength of generations and the spark of what is yet to come.

Micky Hoogendijk has garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success with her new series of sculptures The Ones; inspired by the impact of Covid-19 on families. Her series were also commissioned as the award during the fCN Gassain Jewel Awards.

About the Artist

Micky Hoogendijk’s sculptural practice explores the concept of human connection in its broadest sense. Her bronze sculptures, featuring anonymous figures intertwined and apart, delve into the intricate dynamics of human connection. Through these works, she highlights the power and strength found in human relationships, while also revealing the beauty of vulnerability.

Born in Amsterdam in 1970, Micky’s journey through the arts has been a vibrant tapestry of exploration and creativity. Raised among artists, gallerists, and performers, she was destined for a life in the creative realm. In the 1990s, she emerged as a pivotal figure in the Dutch art scene, directing Rob Scholte BV and gaining fame as an actress.

Micky’s artistic evolution took a transformative turn in 2012 when she embraced photography, using a camera gifted by her late mother. Her self-taught, evocative portraits quickly garnered international acclaim, leading to exhibitions around the globe. Today, her work spans continents and genres, creating new mythologies through her compelling imagery.

Residing in Amsterdam at the historic Huize Zonnewijzer, Micky continues to craft her unique vision. Her collaborative project, The Ones at Home Gallery, bridges her sculptural and photographic practices, inviting visitors to explore the depths of human existence through her lens. Micky Hoogendijk’s art is a profound journey through time, space, and the ever-evolving nature of human relationships.
