Notes
Christiaan Lodewijk Willem Dreibholz (Utrecht 1799-Utrecht 1874) was a Dutch painter. He made paintings, watercolours, drawings and lithograps. He was a pupil of the painter J.C. Schotel. He mostly worked in the Netherlands, France and Great-Britain. Dreibholtz was a member of ‘Arti Sacrum’ in Rotterdam and the Royal Academy in Amsterdam.
As a pupil of J.C. Schotel, Christiaan Lodewijk Dreibholtz preferred painting ships at sea and on rivers, as well as beach scenes. He is known to have made several journeys along the coasts of England and France, resulting in beach scenes featuring rock formations and intensely Romantic depictions of shipwrecks. Dreibholtz worked in Dordrecht—his teacher’s home city—until around 1842, and subsequently in The Hague and Scheveningen.
