Notes

Reinier Nooms, also known under hus alias Zeeman, was one of Amsterdam’s most prominent and famous marine painters of the seventeenth century.

This painting by the Amsterdam artist Reinier Nooms depicts the bustling activity characteristic of coastal waters. In this roadstead, we see inland vessels, single-masted craft, and fishing boats, alongside—further in the distance—larger three-masted ships lying at anchor. The vessel in the left foreground, likely a *boeier*, flies a red-and-white striped flag. Although these are the colors of the city of Hoorn, this flag appears so frequently on Dutch vessels that it does not necessarily indicate the ship’s place of origin. To the right, on a sandbank in the middle ground, fishermen are gathering mussels.
