Notes
Alexander van Bentinck is from a noble family. He became Mayor of the City of Arnhem in 1569 and deputy of the province of Gelderland. In this capacity he signed the Unie van Utrecht in 1579. This was a union between some Dutch provinces and cities to withstand and protect the population against the Habsburg ruler Filips II, who also was the King of Spain.
Aleyd van Buckhorst married in 1576 to Alexander Bentinck. Together they raised six children.
Shortly after Aleyd sat for this portrait, hence the name ‘Juffer’ (= Miss), she married into the Bentinck family.
