Charles Leickert started his education with Bartholomeus van Hove (1790-1880), who headed a studio with numerous pupils and was a teacher at the The Hague Academy as well. Around 1838 Leickert secured hiumself a place in Wijnand Nuyen’s studio. At the age of 23 he had his first exposition at the exhibition of living masters in The Hague, where he presented a river view.
After Nuyen’s death in 1839, Leickert worked at the studio of Nuyen’s father-in-law: Andreas Schelfhout (1787-The Hague-1870), the master of the romantic skating and river landscape. Leickert became an expert in this genre. His beautiful winter and summer landscapes, beach scenes and town views are among the best of any of Schelfhout’s followers.
