Notes

Jacob Dooijewaard was born in Amsterdam in 1876 as the son of the painter Aalt
Dooijewaard and Christina Harberts. Dooijewaard was educated at the
Kunstnijverheidsschool Quellinus Amsterdam (1891-1893) and at the Rijksnormaalschool
voor Tekenonderwijzers (1894-1898) in Amsterdam. His teachers were Jan Derk Huibers
and Jan Visser. Dooijewaard painted genre and figure depictions, portraits, still lifes,
winter scenes and cityscapes. In 1903 his work was awarded the Willink van Collen Prize
for the first time. Initially Dooijewaard worked in Amsterdam. From 1903 he settled in
Het Gooi and worked there in Laren and Blaricum. He made several study trips in and
outside Europe. After 1903 his work continued being awarded, not only in the
Netherlands, but also in Chile (Grand Prix of Santiago) and the United States.

Dooijewaard was a member of several art societies, such as Arti et Amicitiae and the
Kunstenaarsvereniging Sint Lucas in Amsterdam, Pulchri Studio in The Hague and the
Gooische Schildersvereniging. Van Dooijewaard’s work can be found in the Singer
Museum Laren, among others. He was friends with the couple William and Anna Singer.
Dooijewaard was one of the founders of the museum. In addition to the Singer Museum,
the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam also dedicated an honorary exhibition to his work.

Dooijewaard was an Officer in the Order of Oranje-Nassau and Knight 1st class in the
Order of Sint-Olaf. He was an honorary member of the American International Academy
of Art. Dooijwaard died in November 1969 at the age of 93 in Blaricum. His brother
Willem was also a painter.
