Notes

The present work is a very fine example of the work of one of the foremost painters of the Haarlem School that had formed around the landscape painters Jan van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael. The use of an oval shape is characteristic for Coelenbier; his great examples, Jan van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael, hardly used this format anymore in the 1640s.

Born in Kortrijk, Coelenbier moved to Haarlem in the 1630s, where he entered the Guild of St Luke in 1632. Towards the end of his life, in 1676 and 1677, he is mentioned as an art dealer in Haarlem. No early works are known by his hand, nor paintings after 1651.
His signature was in many cases overpainted with that of Jan van Goyen at some time, whose paintings achieved higher prices and whose style is very close.
