Notes

This is one of the paintings that Lomykin made during or after his frequest visits to the Odessa Opera and Ballet Theatre. Ballerinas formed one of his most favourite subjects. In 1970, it had probably just been finished, when he sent it off to the important ‘All-Union Art Exhibition’ in that same year. Lomykin is considered a leading Odessa realist, and belongs to the top echelon of Russian painters. His wide ranging subject matter also includes colourful landscapes, portraits, any form of family life, and nudes. Furthermore, he was excellent in various painting techniques, such as pastels and watercolours. His realistic style of popular subjects, with impressionistic brushwork, and clarity in his subtle choice of colours, have gained him an international reputation. Already in the 1960’s and 70’s, Lomykin was asked to exhibit his works outside Russia, such as in Japan and the United States. The present painting is a good illustration of his virtuosity.

In close association with Konstantin himself, his wife, as well as his daughter, have also been painting. It is therefore important to engage an expert when checking the authenticity of Lomykin’s own work, and have its originality confirmed. Our Gallery has been dealing with Russian paintings of the Social-Realist and Impressionist Schools since the 1980’s. Konstantin Lomykin has always been an important part of our stock and expertise.
