Alongside Pieter Gijsels, Pieter Bouts and Joseph van Bredael, Karel Beschey was among a group of Flemish painters of the 18th century whose works evoke the style of early Netherlandish landscape painting, especially that of Jan Breughel. Characteristic for their works is the repeatedly used standard motives taken from the Breughel vocabulary, alongside with Breughel’s recognizably sunny landscapes in defined colors like blue and green tones. Karel Beschey in particular liked to populate these with delicate and finely painted figures.

Expertise
We thank Jan de Maere for his attribution to Charles Beschey, based on the execution of the foliage and an exact repetition of some figures in other signed paintings by Beschey. For instance: a woman holding a child in the first carriage is exactly repeated in the by Charles Beschey signed and 1751 dated painting auctioned at Christie’s London, 8 July 1988, no. 16). Also the man on a white horse in the foreground is exactly repeated on a painting published by De Jonckheere, no. 18 in his catalogue.
