Hubert Bellis was a student of Henri de Coene at the Academy of Brussels. Until 1875 he worked as a decorative painter. He had a preference for the subject of flower- and still life paintings, although he made his debut with portraits. He is known as a skilled colorist and was considered to be a frontrunner in his genre. His later work hints towards the rise of impressionism. He travelled to Amsterdam around 1883 in the company of Guil laume Vogels and James Ensor, two of the leading artists at the time, to whom he was close friends with. Works of this artist can be seen in museums in Brussels and Liege.
