Notes

Cesar was a Belgian painter and engraver who was mainly active in France. His brother Xavier de Cock was also a painter. Cesar de Cock took lessons at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, first as a singer but when he was stricken by deafness he focused entirely on painting. He was a pupil of François-Louis Français and Edmé-François Daubigny.

Cesar de Cock focused on landscape painting, still lifes, watercolors and genre paintings. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 he fled to Deurle to return to France immediately after the conflict ended. He spent a short time in Paris and later in Gasny where he had a summer residence. From 1880 he settled permanently in Ghent.

Jean-Baptiste Corot, Henri Rousseau, Narcisse Díaz de la Peña and Constant Troyon were among his circle of friends. These painters, also members of the Barbizon School, had a strong influence on his work.
