Notes

Klombeck was one of B.C. Koekkoek’s most famous students. He painted dreamy, romantic landscapes and forest scenes with cattle and a few figures on a dirt road, a river or valley ahead. He found inspiration for his paintings in the untouched nature around his hometown of Cleves. His Paintings were often furnished by the Belgian painter Eugene Verboeckhoven, who worked with Klombeck from 1860 onwards.

What makes this pendant so interesting is that the original frames give a good sense of the provenance. These golden frames – with curved corners on the inside – were mainly used by the Belgian Royal Family and their collection. We also know that one of the Belgian owners of these artworks was a baroness which makes it very likely that these works were in the collection of the Belgian Royal Family somewhere during its lifetime.
