Notes

Hans Bol trained in Mechelen, under his two uncles Jacob Bol I and Jan Bol. After spending two years in Heidelberg, he became a master of the Mechelen guild of Saint Lucas in 1560. Following the capture of Mechelen by Spanish troops in 1572 he moved to Antwerp where he became a master two years later. In 1584 he left Antwerp for Amsterdam, where he remained until his death in 1593.

This drawing is dated 1592 and is executed a year before his death.

Hannema, Rotterdam 1955, no. 183, p. 110; thence to a private Dutch collection since the early 1960’s.
