Notes

He was the brother of Hans Savery (1564-1585) and Jacob Savery (1565-1603), both painters in their own right. In 1580, Roelant accompanies his father to Bruges. In 1585, they both went to Haarlem, and in 1591 to Amsterdam. Some time before 1602, he became the pupil of his brother Jacob Savery. In 1604, he went to Prague and was appointed court painter to Emperor Rudolf II, and later to Emperor Mathias. In the next ten years, he made visits to Tyrol, Salzburg, and Munich. In 1618, he was recorded as being in Haarlem, and a year later in Utrecht. One of his pupils was Allart van Everdingen, and he collaborated with painters such as Cornelis Poelenburgh, Jacob Pynas, Joachim Wtewael, Cornelis van Haarlem and Gillis d’Hondecoeter.

Literature

Dr. Joaneath Spicer (by letter of October 2000) will include the drawing in her forthcoming oeuvre catalogue as by Roelant Savery, done “at the beginning of Saverij’s sojourn in Prague, circa 1603-1604.The style and subject matter are consistent with other drawings attributable to this period, as is the watermark.”
