Notes

Charles Leickert started his education with Bart van Hove (1790-1880), who headed a studio with numerous pupils and was a teacher at the The Hague Academy as well.  Around 1838 Charles Leickert got a place in Wijnand Nuyen’s studio.  At the age of 23 he had his first exposition at the exhibition of living masters in The Hague, where he presented a river view.

After Nuyen’s death in 1839, Leickert worked at the studio of Nuyen’s father-in-law: Andreas Schelfhout (1787-The Hague-1870), the master of the romantic ice and river landscape.

Schelfhout had a great influence on his work ‘s. Leickert became an expert in the genre. His beautiful winter and summer landsapes, beach scenes and town views are among the best of any of Schelfhout’s followers. The play with sun light and the scrupulous attention given to details create a fabulous picture that tells a realistic story.
